General
Q. What is a "Domain" or "Zone"?
A. Both are terms for the file
on a name server that lists a domain name with all of its associated resource
records, IP addresses, and mail server information. Parts of the zone file
include NS, A, CNAME, and MX resource records.
|
|
Q. What is a "Resource Record"?
A. Resource Record is an
entry within the DNS system that defines an Internet resource. A resource
record generally includes a domain name, its type, and a value (usually an IP
address).

|
Q. Can I update my zone file data using your
web-based interface?
A. No, you need to make all
zone changes on the server that is acting as your primary DNS server. In order
to use our web interface for DNS zone management you need to make UltraDNS your
primary DNS server through our Managed DNS service.
|
|
Q. Do I need to tell my domain registrar that I'm
using SecondaryDNS.com?
A. Yes. You need to add two
host records to the name servers listed for your domain(s). This is in addition
to the entry for your primary DNS server.
They are:
UDNS1.ULTRADNS.NET
204.69.234.1
UDNS2.ULTRADNS.NET
204.74.101.1
Each registrar has slightly different
procedures for adding host records to your domain information. Please contact
your registrar for further information.

|
Q. Do I need to tell my ISP I'm using
SecondaryDNS.com?
A. If your ISP is managing
your primary DNS server then yes, you do, to make sure that their server is
configured to accept zone transfer information from us.

|
Technical
Q. Does it matter what type of server or operating
system I use to run primary DNS?
A.No. SecondaryDNS.com can
work with any RFC-compliant DNS server.
|
|
Q. My domain data is not being transferred properly.
What should I do?
A. Most likely your primary
DNS server is not configured to accept zone transfer requests from our network.
Please check to make sure that zone transfers are allowed from the following IP
addresses:
64.41.145.155
204.74.100.10
204.74.97.97
204.74.104.97
|
|
Q. What version of BIND do you use?
A. Our DNS management system
uses its own custom server-side software to provide DNS services. It is a
completely different code base than BIND. In short, BIND version numbers are
not relevant to SecondaryDNS.com. However, we are careful to stay current and
support new features and standards introduced into the BIND code base.

Billing
Q. What happens if I use more queries than are in my
billing package?
A. Just like a cell phone
calling plan, an extra charge is assessed for your additional usage. If you
consistently exceed your package allotment, contact us to discuss whether a
different package could be more appropriate.
|
|
Q. Can SecondaryDNS.com handle primary DNS service as
well?
A. Yes. UltraDNS offers a
complete managed DNS solution. Click here for information about our other DNS
services.
